When should I buy travel insurance?
Timing matters—here’s when to purchase coverage to get the most benefits from your plan.
🗓️ When Should I Buy Travel Insurance?
Purchasing travel insurance at the right time helps ensure you're protected from the very beginning. Ideally, you should buy your plan soon after making your first trip payment—such as your flight, cruise, or tour deposit. Doing so opens the door to broader coverage and avoids missing important eligibility windows.
✅ Buy Within 14–21 Days of Your Initial Trip Deposit
Many travel insurance plans, including our TripWise® and Trip Cancellation Plan options, offer time-sensitive benefits that are only available if you purchase your policy within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment.
These benefits may include:
-
Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions (when otherwise excluded)
-
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) eligibility
-
Financial default of a travel supplier (e.g., airline or cruise line going bankrupt)
🛫 Do I Have to Pay for My Entire Trip First?
No. You can (and should) purchase insurance after your initial deposit, even if the full trip hasn’t been paid off. Just be sure to include the total anticipated trip cost when you apply. You can always update the amount later if needed.
⏰ Can I Buy Insurance Closer to My Departure Date?
Yes, but your options may be limited. Most plans can be purchased up to the day before your departure, but you’ll miss out on time-sensitive benefits and may have a waiting period before cancellation coverage takes effect.
🧠 Our Recommendation
To receive the most comprehensive protection, purchase travel insurance within 14–21 days of your first trip deposit. This gives you access to enhanced benefits and ensures you’re covered for unexpected changes early on.
📌 Example Timeline:
| Trip Booking Date | Ideal Insurance Purchase Window |
|---|---|
| Jan 10 | Jan 10 – Jan 31 |
| May 1 | May 1 – May 22 |
