Adding Dependents to Your Global Health Policy
How to enroll your spouse, children, or other dependents in your international health insurance plan.
🧭 Overview
Whether you’ve recently had a baby, gotten married, or your family is joining you abroad, it’s important to make sure your global health insurance covers everyone who needs it. Most global health plans allow you to add dependents—like a spouse or children—either at the time of application or later through a policy update.
Here’s what to know about who qualifies as a dependent, when to add them, and how the process works.
👨👩👧👦 Who Can Be Added as a Dependent?
You may be eligible to add the following individuals to your policy:
-
Spouse or legally recognized partner
-
Biological or adopted children (usually under age 18 or up to 26 if a full-time student)
-
Newborns (typically within 30 days of birth)
-
Stepchildren (with appropriate documentation)
Some insurers may also allow coverage for domestic partners or long-term caregivers in special circumstances.
📅 When Can You Add a Dependent?
There are typically three key opportunities:
1. During Initial Enrollment
Add all family members when first applying for your global health policy.
2. During the Policy Year
You can request to add a dependent mid-year, usually following a qualifying life event, such as:
-
Marriage
-
Birth or adoption of a child
-
Change in residence or visa status
3. At Renewal
Most insurers allow you to add dependents during the annual renewal window.
⏳ Note: Some benefits—such as maternity coverage or pre-existing condition waivers—may only be available if dependents are added within a specific timeframe.
